Canon announced Powershot D20 on 7th February 2012. This model is Water-proof, Shock-proof, Freeze-proof and Dust-proof. So, it is a rugged compact camera from Canon. It comes with a 12.1-megapixel sensor and a 3-inch LCD screen.

It has got 5x optical zoom ranging from 28mm – 140mm. The maximum resolution possible in this model is 4000 x 3000 pixels. It comes with a BSI-CMOS type sensor having a size of 6.17 x 4.55 mm. It uses the same DIGIC-4 processor, which is seen on high-end SLR models from Canon.

Imaging

Canon Powershot D20 comes with 6 preset white balance settings. Custom white balance option is also available, which gives users the ability to set the WB according to his/her choice. It supports ISO value up to 3200 starting from 100. Canon has also implemented 2 stop IS (Image Stabilisation) feature. So users can shoot at slower shutter speeds while holding the camera in their hand, without causing image blur.

The face detection feature, which is nowadays common in most digital cameras, is also implemented in this model from Canon. 4x digital zoom is also provided. Digital zoom is not a preferred characteristic as it is the same as zooming the final photo taken. Canon Powershot D20 supports both manual focus as well as Autofocus. It has got a 9-point focus system. You can also take macro photos using this as it comes with a macro focus range of 1cm.

Canon Powershot D20 comes with varying maximum aperture values, varying from F3.9 to F4.8 over the zoom range of 28mm-140mm. The minimum shutter speed supported is 15 seconds, whereas the maximum shutter speed possible is 1/1600 seconds. It comes with an in-built flash, with a range of 3.5 m. It does not support external flash. Five different flash modes are present, which include Auto, Fill-in, Red-Eye reduction, Slow Sync, and Flash Off mode. D20 supports 3 metering modes, Multi, Centre-weighted, and spot metering mode. You can also make use of the self-timer, which can be set to 2, 10 or any number of seconds (Custom mode). Exposure compensation of +/- 2EV is available in 1/3EV steps.

One can also record videos at a high resolution of 1080p (1920 x 1080, at 24fps). Other supported resolutions include 1280 x 720 (30fps) 640 x 480 (30, 120 fps), 320 x 240 (240 fps). It supports mono audio recording and has got a mono speaker.

This model comes with a PureColor II TFT LCD screen of 3-inch size. It supports 461,000 screen dots. Viewfinder feature is not there in this model, as it does not belong to the SLR camera category. It comes with live view, just like the compact digital camera. There is no touch-screen option in this model.

Storage & Connectivity

It uses SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards for storing images. In order to transfer the images to your PC USB 2.0 connectivity is provided. You can simply connect the camera to PC using the cable provided along with the camera to download the images. You can also connect it to a monitor/TV that supports HDMI.

Size & Cost

Canon Powershot D20 has got a dimension of 112 x 71 x 28 mm. It weighs 228 gm, including the battery weight. It uses a Lithium-Ion NB-6L battery. A battery charger adapter is also provided along with the camera. A built-in GPS module is also provided in this model, which helps you to tag the photos easily. It costs around 350$.
