Canon EOS 200D – What makes it so Special?
You may be hearing a lot about the new DSLR camera from Canon, the Canon EOS 200D. This is world’s smallest DSLR camera with the fastest Auto focusing system. Some are even saying it is the best camera for vlogging. So, let us see what makes it so special?
Canon EOS 200D is actually a redesign of Canon’s EOS 100 D with some major improvements. Like any Canon APS-C cameras, it supports both EF lenses as well as EF-S lenses. Whatever lens you are going to use, the effective focal length will be 1.6 times the actual focal length. For example, if you are using a 100mm lens with 200D, then the effective focal length would be 160mm on this camera.

Guided User Interface
This is one feature which I really loved in this camera. This is a great feature especially for people who are new to photography to learn and understand the camera settings. Better late than Never. Thankfully Canon has implemented the guided User Interface thereby making it more user-friendly. This will give the user a basic idea of the effect of increasing or decreasing certain camera parameters. User will be given some additional shooting tips along with that.
Image Quality
Canon EOS 200D offers 24.2 Megapixels of Image resolution. There is a great improvement in the dynamic range when compared to its predecessor Canon EOS 100D. Noise performance is also quite impressive which makes it usable in low light conditions when compared to Canon EOS 100D.In low light conditions, it is better to shoot in RAW format rather than in JPEG. The noise at high ISO can later be removed while post-processing. I wouldn’t recommend you to choose an ISO above 6400 in this model since it is very grainy after 6400.
Video Quality
Canon supports full HD video recording quality of 1920 x 1080p at 60/50/30/25/24 fps. The user can set the exposure according to his/her choice. The frame rate of 60 is very useful in shooting videos in slow motion. It doesn’t support 4k capability, which we can’t expect for a camera in this line up from Canon. Canon has provided a 3.5mm stereo mini-jack on the left side of the body for plugging the external microphone. You can make use of an external microphone to improve the quality of the audio in the video. In order to switch to video recording mode, there is an option in the rotating ON/OFF dial on the top of the camera body. This makes it easy to switch the camera to video recording mode.
If you are expecting to record shake free videos without any additional support, just like what Canon has implemented in their higher models like Canon EOS 77D & 800D, then sorry to say that they have not incorporated the 5-axis digital stabilization feature in this model.
The Canon 18-55 f/4-5.6 IS STM lens is equipped with a stepper motor which helps in the smooth transition of focus while recording videos. Since this motor is silent, you can get noise free audio in the video. Certain lenses make a sound while video recording which will get captured in the audio part. This noise is because of the motor in the lens trying to focus.
Build
Inside chassis of Canon EOS 200D is made up of Aluminium alloy and polycarbonate resin with glass fiber to make it rigid. It weighs around 453 grams (Only Body). It comes in 3 colors, Black, White, and Silver. The commonly found color is the Black one. The size of the camera is 122.4 x 92.6 x 69.8mm.
If you are looking for a camera to shoot in harsh weather conditions like outdoor with lots of dust or in wet and damp condition then this is not the right camera. It doesn’t come with any weather sealing. So even if your lens support weather sealing, it won’t be effective since the effective weather sealing fails at the camera side. The kit lens which comes with this camera, Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens is a good one to start with if you are an amateur in photography. It is a pretty decent wide angle lens and is also good for shooting people and portraits.
Pros
- It comes with wireless connectivity options which include, Wifi, Bluetooth, and Wireless. So you can easily transfer your photos on the go.
- Pretty good image quality in this price range.
- Autofocusing while video recording is good.
Cons
- It has only 9 AF points for focusing.
- Difficulty in accessing a few manual controls
